How are our rugs made?

MOMTAZ designs and produces bespoke rugs, hand-knotted or hand-tufted, in collaboration with a network of specialized workshops. Our process relies on a structured and fully controlled production chain, ensuring quality, traceability, and adaptability for every project.

Reinforced quality control is carried out at every stage of production (yarns, dyeing, weaving, finishing).

Unique, ethical, and eco-friendly handmade rugs

At MOMTAZ, each rug is designed with respect for tradition, people, and nature.
We favor noble, durable materials, carefully selected for their quality and their limited environmental impact. The wool, carded and hand-spun, retains all its natural richness.

The dyes are made using environmentally friendly pigments, ensuring deep, long-lasting colors.

Our workshops are GoodWeave® certified, guaranteeing production free from child labor and carried out in conditions that respect both the artisans and their working environment.

Each MOMTAZ rug is a unique, durable, and responsibly made piece, born from a balance between artisanal mastery, technical precision, and a strong ethical commitment.

The three key stages in creating a MOMTAZ rug

1. The creation or selection of the design

In a first step, we define the choice of the design together during a personalized appointment in our showroom.

You can select a model from our exclusive collection, organized into four universes: Border, Graphic, Vintage, and Abstract;
provide your own drawing, which our team will translate into a bespoke rug perfectly tailored to your expectations;
or start from a blank canvas, to create together an original and unique piece born from your vision and our craftsmanship.

2. The choice of the technique

We then determine the most suitable manufacturing technique for your project. This choice depends on the complexity of the design, the density of details, and the desired finish. Like fine watchmaking, each rug requires a level of precision and rigor comparable to the complications of a timepiece.

Based on these criteria, we guide the production either toward a hand-knotted quality, a symbol of excellence and finesse, or toward a hand-tufted quality, ideal for contemporary creations with controlled reliefs and textures.

3. Final measurements and project approval

An appointment is scheduled at the client’s location to take precise measurements.
This step is carried out either by our installer, who will later handle the rug installation (stair runners or recessed installation), or by a member of our team responsible for confirming the exact dimensions before production begins.

These measurements allow us to prepare an accurate final quote and ensure a perfect fit of the rug within the space.

Discover our manufacturing techniques

A rug depicting two people assembling warp threads on a wooden loom, preparing for hand-knotting.
  • The hand-knotted technique is the most ancestral and prestigious method of rug making.
Performed on a vertical loom, it relies on a fully manual process in which each knot is tied
one by one around the warp threads, following a pre-drawn design.

This method requires great dexterity, remarkable patience, and perfect coordination among the artisans, who may work alone or as a team on the same rug.
Depending on the knot density and the complexity of the pattern, it can take several weeks to several months to complete a single piece — for example, around
    10 weeks for a 7.5 m² rug.

Once the weaving is finished, the rug is removed from the loom, washed, stretched, and hand-trimmed to achieve its final texture and reveal the full richness of its nuances.

This technique gives the rug unparalleled quality, exceptional longevity, and a truly unique authenticity — the signature of genuine artisanal craftsmanship.

  • The hand-tufted technique is a semi-artisanal manufacturing method that combines manual precision with modern tools.
The artisan uses an air-powered tool called a
tufting gun to shoot strands of wool through a stretched cotton canvas.
Each area of the pattern is filled in by hand,
color by color, following the original design.

Once the entire pattern has been tufted, the back of the rug is coated with a layer of latex to secure the fibers, then covered with a finishing cloth.
    The surface is then
sheared, sculpted, and brushed to achieve the desired height, texture, and effects.

This technique offers great creative freedom — organic shapes, gradients, reliefs — while allowing for a faster production process than hand-knotting.
It is particularly well suited for
custom contemporary rugs designed for residential or professional projects.

  • The auto-tufted technique, used for our Grand Passage quality, is a mechanized tufting process that combines performance, precision, and durability.
Carried out with computer-controlled automated machines, it allows for faithful reproduction of patterns while optimizing production times.

The wool, vegetal silk, or technical fiber yarn is mechanically injected into a stretched cotton canvas, following a digitized design.
This process ensures uniform density, excellent wear resistance, and perfect dimensional stability, ideal for high-traffic areas such as hotels, boutiques, offices, headquarters, yachts, or aircraft.

Each Grand Passage rug is fully customizable — in dimensions, colors, and textures — and combines technical robustness with refined aesthetics, true to the MOMTAZ spirit of excellence.
